Multiple people were shot, including a Knoxville police officer, at a Tennessee high school Monday afternoon, the authorities said.
The Knoxville Police Department said the shooting occurred at Austin-East Magnet High School around 3 p.m. The department urged residents to avoid the area.
The conditions of the victims were not immediately known.
Bob Thomas, superintendent of Knox County Schools, said on Twitter that the school building had been secured, and that students not involved in the episode were allowed to leave with their families.
Knoxville police had set up a family reunification site at a nearby baseball field.
At a news conference at a local high school, Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee addressed the shooting before delivering an announcement on education in the state.
“Pray for that situation, for the families and victims who might be affected in our state,” Mr. Lee said.
